Two nets can look identical on day one. Three summers later, one still holds a water pipe's weight and the other crumbles in your hand like dry leaves. The difference is invisible: UV stabilisation.
What Sunlight Does to Plastic
Ultraviolet radiation carries enough energy to snap the polymer chains that give HDPE its strength. Each broken chain is microscopic, but they add up — the material gets brittle, colour fades, and one windy day the net tears along a fold line. Chemists call it photodegradation. Farmers call it "the net went to powder."
India's sun makes this brutal. High UV index regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan can destroy unstabilised polyethylene in a single year of exposure.
What UV Stabilisation Actually Is
UV stabilisers are additives mixed into the polymer before extrusion, usually as a concentrated masterbatch. The most common family, HALS (hindered amine light stabilisers), works like a self-recharging shield — it intercepts the reactive fragments UV creates and neutralises them, over and over.
Two details matter when you buy:
- The stabiliser must be inside the yarn. Added at extrusion, it protects the full cross section for the life of the net. Surface treatments wash and wear off.
- Dose determines lifespan. More stabiliser means more years. This is a real cost, which is why a genuine 5-year net cannot match the price of a 1-year net.
Reading Life Claims Sensibly
A claim like "5 year life" assumes typical field exposure. Real life depends on your UV index, whether the net is stretched taut (stress accelerates ageing), and colour — black and dark green nets carry carbon black, itself an excellent UV absorber, so dark nets generally outlast pale ones in identical conditions.

How to Make Any Net Last Longer
Keep it tensioned but not drum tight, avoid sharp edges and rusty wire ties that create stress points, wash off dust and bird droppings occasionally (dirt holds heat), and if a section fails early along a crease, re-tension the rest before the tear spreads.
